Router security feature checklist

Start with your current router. Save its current settings or take notes before changing anything so you can reverse a change that disrupts your household.

Updates

Can you find the router model and current firmware version? Does the maker still provide security updates, and is an update available?

Administrator access

Is the router’s administrator password unique and different from the Wi-Fi password? Is remote administration disabled unless you have a specific, understood need for it?

Wireless settings

Is the home network protected with WPA2-AES or WPA3? Is WPS off unless you need it for a documented reason? Do guests have a separate way to connect?

Recovery plan

Do you know how to sign back in, restore your saved configuration, and reconnect important devices if a change goes wrong? Record only the steps here; keep passwords and recovery details somewhere private.

If you cannot find a setting or the router no longer receives updates, note that gap. You do not need to replace working equipment just because a feature has a newer name.
